Only One Volunteer Surrender Check List Gets it Right; BOP Policy 5580.10
Self Surrender Check-List:
There are multiple volunteer/voluntary/self surrender check-lists out there that are flat out wrong.
The BOP will let you mail home or throw away anything you’re not supposed to have. So in the end it doesn’t matter. The top tip here is medication. A lot of people will say that you can bring your meds. Take it from Easy Time Consulting, but also official BOP policy. (Click on the Doing Easy Time image for policy #5510.08)
Any medication you bring will be immediately disposed of. Your PSR lists all of your medications. A generic version of your medication (from the BOP’s own pharmacy) will be ready and waiting for you when they call the Med Line Move first thing in the morning.
Here at Easy Time Consulting our clients get it right.
When a person voluntarily surrenders to Bureau custody, they will be permitted to retain only the following items:
■ Plain wedding band (no stones or intricate markings)
■ Earrings for females only (one pair, no stones) with a declared value of less than $100
■ medical or orthopedic devices
■ Legal documents
■ Religious items approved by the Warden as long as they do not present a threat to the security of the institution (religious medallions and chains must have a declared value of less than $100, male or female)
■Prescription glasses. Social Security cards and other forms of identification (e.g., driver’s license, passport) are to be retained in the Central File until the release.
